What this covers

Canopy is a desktop app, made by The Banana Standard LLC, that manages sessions of AI coding agent CLIs you have installed yourself. These terms cover the app, this website, and the optional hosted services behind it: the sync hub that carries a shared thread, the read-only thread viewer, and the account site. Using any of them means these terms apply. If you do not agree with them, do not use the hosted services — the app itself works without them.

Canopy is proprietary software, copyright The Banana Standard LLC. The published application is free to download and use, for anything you like, including at work. The source code is not licensed for redistribution or derivative works, and nothing on this page grants any right to it.

It is provided as-is

Canopy is early software from a very small company. It comes with no warranty of any kind — not of merchantability, not of fitness for any particular purpose, not that it will work, not that it will not lose your work. To the fullest extent the law allows, The Banana Standard LLC is not liable for any damage, data loss, cost or lost time arising from using it.

That is a real statement and not a formality: this software drives agents that edit files on your disk and run commands on your machine. Keep your work in version control.

The hub is a free service with no promises attached

The sync hub is free. There is nothing to pay for today. In exchange there is no uptime commitment, no support commitment, and no guarantee of durability: it may be slow, it may be down, it may lose data, its behaviour may change, and it may be shut off entirely. If it disappears, shared threads and their transcripts go with it. Do not use it as a system of record for anything you cannot afford to lose.

What the hub keeps and for how long is described on the privacy page. Read that one before you share a thread; it is the more important of the two.

What your agent does is yours

Canopy starts agent processes on your computer, under your account, with your credentials, against folders you chose. It gates a thread’s tool calls behind approval prompts, and it offers a dangerous mode that removes that gate on purpose. You are responsible for what those processes do — the commands they run, the files they change, the money they spend with your agent provider, and anything they touch beyond your machine. Canopy is not in the request path between your agent and its provider; that relationship, and its costs and terms, are between you and them.

You are also responsible for what you put on the hub. An invite link is a credential: anyone holding it can read that thread, with no account of their own. Who you send it to is your decision, and sharing a thread means sharing whatever your agent read while it ran.

Acceptable use

Do not use Canopy or its hosted services to:

• break the law, or help someone else break it;
• attack, overload, probe or circumvent the hub, this site, or anyone else’s systems;
• share content you have no right to share, or someone else’s credentials or personal data;
• impersonate another person, or use a display name intended to make someone in a thread believe you are someone you are not;
• resell or rebrand the hosted services, or run automated load against them beyond ordinary use.

Accounts

You need an account to host a thread; you need nothing to join one. An account can be disabled — including for abuse, for anything on the list above, or because the service is being wound down — and a disabled account cannot pair new machines or host. You can sign out or revoke any machine at any time, and you can ask for the account and its data to be deleted by writing to the address below.

Changes

These terms and the service can change. Material changes will be reflected in the date at the top of this page. Continuing to use the hosted services after a change means the new version applies; if you would rather not, stop using them and the desktop app is unaffected.

What is missing

These terms name no governing law and no dispute process, because none has been chosen yet. That is a gap and it is written here rather than papered over with a jurisdiction picked out of a template. It will be filled in — with a lawyer — before Canopy charges anyone money.
